Strategic Planning: What goals were set that relate to the Rho Chi mission?

In addition to the ideals set forth by the Rho Chi Society, the Gamma Tau Chapter of LECOM School of pharmacy represents academic excellence and hopes to motivate future students to pursue active membership in the Rho Chi Society. Our Gamma Tau chapter strives to have a positive impact in our community and to be a good neighbor to those in need.

Activities:  This section is usually the main focus of the report.  The chapter reports should contain detailed descriptions of all activities developed and conducted to further the society’s mission.  It may contain a combination of activities within the college and/or university as well as activities that provide outreach outside the academic community.  School-wide events that provide evidence of intellectual leadership (e.g., a sponsored lecture, symposium, poster session, etc.) may be included.  Service activities for non-members such as tutoring may be included.  It is recommended that students also provide at least one community service activity outside of the academic institution (e.g., volunteering at a long-term care facility, providing health information to patients/citizens in the community, etc.).  The description MUST include whether these activities are on-going (if so, for how long) or are new initiatives.

In September, two Rho Chi students manned a water stop at Run Around Erie.  Run Around Erie is a 15K run, 1 mile and 5K walk/run along Presque Isle State Park in celebration of National Alcohol/Drug Addiction Recovery Month.  This year was the first that Rho Chi students participated in the event, but it is likely that it will become an annual activity for our chapter.

In October, two students from Rho Chi and two students from PSHP provided a poison prevention program at Walmart in honor of Pharmacy Week.  This was a new initiative for our chapter, but has the potential to become a yearly event.

Three students from Rho Chi held a poison prevention program for 100 kindergartners from the Belle Valley Schools.  This activity was a new initiative for our chapter.

Financial/ Budgeting: Please provide information on how your budget was determined and approved in order to support your chapter’s activities. Please include any fund-raising that was conducted to meet this budget.

The LECOM Chapter has an assigned treasurer who tracks all financial activities. The budget is determined based on a comparison to the previous year’s fiscal activities and a review of any anticipated new business for the Chapter. The faculty advisor is the coordinator of the budget approval process. A fund raiser was conducted in the summer of 2006. This fundraiser involved a local restaurant that agreed to donate a portion of the funds collected from patrons that presented a coupon indicating that they were dining in support of LECOM Rho Chi. The fundraiser was successful. In addition various LECOM student groups provide financial support to the Chapter. It is anticipated that fundraising and College support will continue to grow in the future.

Initiation Function: Please describe the initiation function, including when and where the initiation ceremony took place, who attended the function, information on the speaker (if applicable), etc.

The induction ceremony was held on March 31, 2007, at the Ambassador Banquet and Conference Center, in Erie, Pennsylvania.  The ceremony was attended by the inductees and their families as well as school faculty.  V. James Fiorenzo, RPh, MBA was our keynote speaker at the induction ceremony.  He is the Senior Vice President of Strategic and Support Services at Hamot Health Foundation.

Evaluation/Reflection: Please provide a reflective paragraph that evaluates the effectiveness of your activities and ways to improve.  Information that may be included in this section includes number of members participating, number of others involved in the activity (e.g., recipients of outreach), feedback from members and others who were involved in the activities.

Overall, our activities have been successful, but it is important that we get more Rho Chi members involved in each activity.  It has been difficult this past year because a number of students were out of town/out of state completing our final year of rotations, and so were unable to participate.  A way that we can help to solve this problem is to try to schedule activities earlier in the summer before the students leave for rotations.  This would give more members the opportunity to participate, and should therefore make the events even more successful.  Even though we had a limited number of students at each activity they were successful, and we had positive feedback from those involved.
